'Real Housewives of NYC Returns': Will It Be As Good Without Bethenny Frankel?

'Real Housewives of NYC Returns': Will It Be As Good Without Bethenny Frankel?

There's been a lot of talk lately about the downhill slide of The Real Housewives franchise. The D.C. women proved tepid enough to (reportedly) get canceled after just one season. And the relatively tame Miami women may be the next to go. So the timing couldn't be better for The Real Housewives of New York City  (Bravo, Thursday, April 7, at 10 p.m. ET) to come roaring back for their fourth season.

But now that the cast has lost its breakout star, Bethenny Frankel, to the spinoff show Bethenny Ever After (among other projects), can the void she leaves be adequately filled by Alex McCord, Jill Zarin, Kelly Bensimon, LuAnn de Lesseps, Ramona Singer, Sonja Morgan and new addition Cindy Barshop?

In this season 4 previewthe New York divas prove that they are perfectly able to ramp up the crazy. In fact, after watching those other versions of the show, the New Yorkers remind us what this series is all about.

Brazen self-confidence. Explosive confrontations. And lots and lots of crazy behavior.

We get to follow the women to a wedding and on a trip to Morocco. And of course, we get to sit in on tons of restaurant showdowns. In one particularly humorous exchange, de Lesseps refers to McCord's "Herman Munster shoes."

"They were Louis Vutton shoes!" McCord protests.

"Well, even Louis Vutton makes mistakes," de Lesseps replies.

Meanwhile, newbie Barshop wastes no time recognizing Singer's unique gift for gab. "Ramona insulted a whole country in five seconds," she sniffs during their trip abroad.

In other news, Morgan's got a new, younger (naturally) boyfriend, Brian Farrell, though she doesn't like the word "boyfriend." Bensimon, on the other hand, keeps the drama to her female friendships. She told E! News that she took a sabbatical from dating during filming.

Viewers will be happy to hear that Zarin is as catty as ever. She's seen here gossiping about McCord and Singer's sartorial choices. Don't they know that it's gauche to wear cream at a wedding?!

"There's been kind of a natural division," Barshop tells the camera at one point. "The brunettes vs. the blondes." Oooh, this ought to be good!

Who needs Frankel when you've got a blonde-vs.-brunette throw-down to look forward to?
