Gwyneth's Glee sex education lesson is out of touch

Gwyneth Paltrow's forthcoming singing stint in Glee has her unwittingly covering a Gary Glitter classic

Lost in Showbiz is distraught to report of a setback in Gwyneth Paltrow's ongoing musical career. Apparently the next series of Glee contains an episode called "Sexy", featuring a scene in which Paltrow leads her sex-education class in a rendition of a suitably steamy number: "Right or wrong don't it turn you on," she sings, "can't you see we're wasting time?"

Alas, no one apparently alerted the producers of Glee to the fact that the song in question ? Do You Want To Touch Me (Oh Yeah), a 1982 hit in the US for Joan Jett ? was originally performed and co-written by Gary Glitter, which, with the best will in the world, rather switches the tone from "sexy" to "a bit creepy under the circumstances". An online furore subsequently followed. Admittedly, it wasn't the best online furore of the week ? that would be the Daily Mail's decision to print a 1937 photograph of Eva Braun blacked up, captioned "Me as Al Jolson", provoking Rudyard of Manchester to comment: "Can you imagine the trouble she'd be in today for blacking up like that? Doesn't bear thinking about", and John Bull of Wolverhampton to note: "I guess that means she has no chance of getting a job at the BBC then, what with their right-on attitude" ? but damaging nonetheless.

Placing a consoling arm around the shoulder of a woman who now appears to have unwittingly launched her musical career by performing a song on which a convicted child sex offender asks if you want to touch him in a classroom full of teenagers, Lost in Showbiz says: cheer up! It could have been worse, then jerks its thumb in the direction of Gary Glitter's 1980 single What Your Mama Don't See (Your Mama Don't Know).
