LeAnn Rimes is sick of hearing rumors about herself -- even happy ones! The country star has responded to reports that she's engaged to boyfriend Eddie Cibrian -- and says that they prove how unreliable gossip can be.
"The fact that our 'engagement' has spread so furiously over the past 24 hours off of an E! News article that is 150% untrue just shows you the lack of credible "sources" they seem to find and build a story around," Rimes tweeted on Friday.
"Even though this is positive 'news,' it's not true," Rimes continued. "Imagine all the negative 'true stories' they've reported over the last year that aren't true either."
The pop star went on to thank her fans "for the premature congrats," and joked that E! News would soon be reporting that she was pregnant.
The trusted gossip site reported last week that Cibrian and Rimes were secretly engaged, after the couple staged a goofy fake proposal on Halloween. In spite of Rimes' Twitter takedown, E! News posted an article on Friday saying they were standing by their story -- because they heard it from "a most reliable family source." In response, Rimes took to Twitter to claim that the site was flat-out lying.
"Hey E, there is NO family source on my side that would EVER call you!" Rimes tweeted on Saturday. "Your new article cracks me up! Can't admit a wrong, sad!"
So, E! News says that LeAnn Rimes is lying, and LeAnn Rimes says that E! News is lying. Somebody must be telling the truth -- but who? On the one hand, the media has been particularly tough on Rimes lately, what with the Shape Magazine fiasco and the constant bashing by Eddie Cibrian's ex-wife. So maybe the story is false, and Rimes is just seriously fed up.
But let's play the devil's advocate for a second: why does LeAnn Rimes care so much if the media is reporting that she's engaged? Even if it's not true, it's certainly not a horrible thing for people to believe. And it's something that every single celebrity couple deals with on a pretty much weekly basis. By releasing that twit pic of Cibrian's mock proposal, Rimes must have known that she was feeding the rumor mill. Why would she have so much hostility about a passing rumor ... unless there was actually a grain of truth to it?
One thing seems certain: by responding to every single rumor on Twitter (and nearly every hater, as well), LeAnn Rimes is adding a fuel to the fire. Maybe she needs to take a step back and let a few stories pass without comment -- regardless of whether they're true.
