Diane Lane's Marriage Secret? Be Willing to Be Wrong

Diane Lane's Marriage Secret? Be Willing to Be Wrong

After being married to actor Josh Brolin for six years, Diane Lane has learned a few things about what makes a relationship work.

"It's staying grateful, humble, willing to be wrong and thinking about the other person at least as much as you think about yourself," the actress, 45, tells iVillage exclusively. "(Put yourself in) the other person's moccasins, you know?"

For Lane, who plays legendary sportswoman Penny Chenery in the horse-racing biopic Secretariat (which hits theaters Oct. 8), being married to an actor is another added benefit to a happy marriage. In fact, she says it's the reason neither of them gets jealous when the other does onscreen sex scenes. "The nice thing about marrying into the same industry is that you understand," she says. "You just understand what went into a day."

Watch our exclusive video interview (above) to find out what the real woman behind Lane's character thought of her portrayal and how Lane felt horsing around with her equine costars.
